Things to visit at Bali: Legian street

Legian street, at first sight a street filled with shady individuals, women who want to offer you massages and more women who want to offer you massages. But if you walk through it you start discovering the many bars in the street.

When you go on a vacation with your student friends. You just have to party.

The first night out some guy came to us and told us he had an offer at his bar, all-in drinks till midnight for 100.000 rupiah. The fun thing about this, is that 100.000 rupiah isn’t much money. It’s about 7 euro. This bar was called Eikon and we soon discovered that this offer applied to every night.

Legian street is filled with many other bars. The biggest one is SkyGarden this is a building where you have to pay 100.000 rupiah to enter and to get tickets for 2 drinks. But once inside you can choose out of 8 different rooms with other music genres. The biggest room even has two floors of its own. This biggest room was always filled with Asians, really nobody else. Sometimes you could get one the stage and have a good look over the room and it was very weird to see only Asians, and about a thousand of them.

This is a picture of the main room:

My friend took this picture from the stage of the main room (with his cellphone):

There were many other bars where we went such as The Bounty and The Engine Room. Every bar in the street has it’s own promotions and style. Very fun to see.

At the end of the night we always went back to Eikon because it had the best music for us. We got to know many other students here whom we also hanged out with during the day.

This is a picture (were we posed for a laugh) at Eikon:

Legian street is also filled with people who offer the tourists rides home. Our hostel was like 5 minutes from this street but one day we decided to take mopeds home, just for a laugh. We all hopped on a bike and they took us to our hostel. From that day we did it every day because it was cheap, and also very very fun.

Things to visit at Bali: Mt. Batur

Mt. Batur is an active volcano located in Bali. This volcano was one of my highlights of our vacation. It is said, when on this volcano, you can see the most beautiful sunrise.

Climbing this volcano was the one thing we looked most forward to, all of us. Unfortunately, one of our friend, the one who planned this trip got sick. So we had to go without him.

The taxi came for us around 2 A.M. We were excited to go. It was a long trip to the volcano, and our driver looked tired. But we made it.

When we arrived, we got a guide to help us get to the top of the mountain. We started around 3-4 A.M. for a walk in the dark. Because we are a bit competitive we wanted to be at the top as soon as possible, passing as much groops as possible. It was a fun hike. Our guide was also a very funny and social person.

When we arrived at the top it was still dark and we couldn’t see too much. But as time passed by, the view became more and more visible. While we were resting at the top, our guide made us breakfeast.

The view there is very spectacular and what even made it more beautiful, was the exhausting hike.

The sunrise was indeed very beautiful to watch. Also a very nice panoramic view of Bali.

When the sunrise was over, we went exploring the other things on the volcano. We went to the crater. A lot of monkeys live there. Our guide showed us a hole in the volcano and he said: “watch closely”. So we watched without knowing what would come, then he blew in the hole and a big cloud of smoke came out of it. A sign that the volcano is still very active.

For the descent, we went down on the other side of the volcano, to see some other nice panoramic views. To make it fun again, we raced to the bottom against each other and against our guide.

Things to visit at Bali: Waterbom

Of course, on every vacation, if you have a water park around, then you should obviously go there.

Me and my friends didn’t really plan this in our vacation. But one day we forgot to set our alarm and it was to late to do something else, so it was the perfect day to go to this water park.

In this park, you can do 3 sorts of things. You can go for the waterslides, you can relax and you can go and eat something. Because we were a bit late, the only thing we did was waterslides, as fast as possible.

This park has some really fun rides. The cool thing about most rides is that you get some sort of launched from a small chamber. Here is a picture of one of those chambers.

There is a big variety of rides. Some are faster some are slower. My favourites were;

The Climax; you get launched from a small chamber almost vertically, then you went back up into a small looping and then back down. There are some serious safety precautions for this slide. They always wait till the person is out of the slide, and they have a small door for people who didn’t got back up in the looping.

The Smash Down 2.0; This slide starts at 25.9 meters. a trap door releases you and you will go down in a few seconds. Nothing special about this slide. You just go straight down, but really fast.

The other slides were also fun, but for me, these 2 stood out.

When the park closes, the fun isn’t over. Across the street there is a KFC, a Kentucky Fried Chicken. Obviously we went there. I had my first KFC there actually. A new world was opened.

There are also other things next to the water park such as stores and bars.

Things to visit at Bali: Uluwatu Temple

The Uluwatu Temple is a temple located next to a 70 meter deep cliff into the sea. It is located in Uluwatu.

The temple was build in the 11th century and was ment for religious reasons. Back then it was forbidden to go there.

11741257_10207049341703172_151774701134657948_o This is one of my friends leaning over the edge of the cliff

To enter, you must buy a ticket and a violet skirt. The skirt has religious reasons and because the people from Bali are very religious, you really have to wear this.

When you are inside the domain, you have to follow a path to the temple. From here on, you will have a really nice view. If you want beautiful pictures, this is one the places you have to visit.

There are also monkeys living here. They consider the temple as their home. We heard the monkeys can steal your items, but we haven’t noticed any monkey searching our bags. The monkeys are also protecting the temple.

The actual temple isnt the only thing you can visit there. You can walk further and experience some beautiful nature. Some monkeys and cows are wandering there.

Bali is a beautiful traveling destiniation and this temple proves again why.

Things to visit at Bali: Tegenungan Waterfall

The Tegenungan Waterfall is definitely something you have to visit. It is something you have to combine with other things to visit. If you visit places around the Tegenungan Waterfall. Make sure you have time for this as well.

10403283_10207641038690837_7096591336555856812_n(This is me next to the giant waterfall)

The waterfall is located next to Petanu River. When you arrive here, you have a panoramic view of the waterfall, it is very beautiful.

But if you want to see the waterfall up close, you can walk down to the river. It’s a long walk down some stairs.

When you walk down the stairs. You will pass a small market stall where you can buy some drinks such as Bintang. Its the local beer of Bali.

The view close to the waterfall is very beautiful, and you can actually swim to it. The water was very cold when we were there, but it was worth the trouble. You can actually swim across the waterfall into a small cave. Also, the nature you see around you is just spectacular.

Things to visit at Bali: Ubud Monkey Forest

When you visit Bali, something you really have to do is Monkey Forest in Ubud.

Its a small forest located in Ubud, A city in Bali. This forest is the home of many crab-eating macaques. They are small monkeys who live in the south-easy Asia. This place has around 10000 visitors each month.

Right when you enter the forest, you can already see many monkeys. They are all around the place. But if you really want to see a monkey up close, you can buy some banana’s from one of the market stalls around. If you do so, and you put your banana in the air, one of the +-350 monkeys will crawl upon one of your shoulders and will starting eating it on your shoulder.

The forest has several temples. The monkeys see these temples as their home. There are 3 temples in the forest. The first one is the Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal temple.

This one is considered as the main temple. It is used for worshipping their God.

The second temple is the Pura Beji, this temple was used for spiritual and physical cleansing.

The last temple you can find is the Pura Prajapati, this is the cemetery. Every five years a mass cremation is held here.

monkey-forest-bali-01

My personal opinion; this forest is something you really have to visit if you go to Bali. These monkeys are a must see, and its quite funny when a monkey sits on your shoulder.

But there isn’t enough to see to stay there a whole day. My advise is you plan a second or third thing to do on your day, maybe something in the area.
